The Pawn and the Dom
There is more information on Moet & Chandon Dom Perignon Champagne (and the year 1921) then is on this post. Everything on this post I learned on watching Pawn Stars (history channel).
A man came into the Pawn shop with a 1921 Dom Perignon Champagne, unopened. Dom Perignon Champagne is named after the 17th century monk Dom Perignon. Dom Perignon invented the metal wire the holds the cork in the sparking wine bottle. When he invented it, he used hemp string instead of metal. Before this it was very difficult to make sparkling wine for one reason. As the wine fermented the carbonation in sparkling wine builds up and sometimes the bottle would burst or the cork would come out. The bottle and sparkling wine would be ruined.
Moet & Chandon is the company that makes Dom Perignon Champagne. They produced the first vintage in 1921. It was released in 1936 on new years eve. The fist year only 1,000 bottles came to the US. 1921 was one of the best vintages if not, the best vintages of Dom Perignon Champaign. In 2004 a few bottles were sold at auction for $8,000.
Fun Fact:
Dom Perignon Champagne was served on the table of Louis XIV.
Since 1921 there have only been 35 vintages.
Around 5 million are made each year
