Does a differnt glass make a differnce?
On a fundamental level, yes. This was something my husband learned when he poured a sparkling wine into his pint glass. Today I did this again so I can accurately describe what changes. I also pour beer into a sparkling wine glass. But first some information behind different glasses for sparkling wine.
Sparkling wine glasses is served in three different types of stemware, tulips, flutes and trumpets. ![]() |
Tulip Flute Trumpet |
Any of these glass will work great for sparkling wine. There are a two, but very important, reasons behind these designs. First there is a long steam to prevent the hand from warming up the wine. Next is the shape of the glass, the tall narrow shape helps prevent the sparkling from going flat.

Given these facts a beer will also do well in these glasses. At some bars they do serve beer in a glass similar to these shapes.
Here is what I used:
Sparkling wine Flute Pint Glass Beer
The Kraemer, Blanc de Blancs is a sparking wine from France. It has a nice citrus flavor with many bubbles. There is also very little foam when pouring the sparkling. However when I pour the sparkling wine in the pint glass it completely foams up. The flavor is harder to find, and the sparkling has gone slightly flat. Sadly it is not that good in a pint glass.
The beer taste very similar in both glasses. In the flute though the bubbles are very strong, they almost sting the nose.
This is probably the easiest way to taste the difference and the importance of glass choice. Glass choice matters with all kinds of wine. Some palate can tell the difference between very subtle changes in glass.
Enjoy the fun of trying the same wine in different glasses. It can be an interesting and fun experience. Let me know what you think.
